Apple yesterday announced the new iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch in the Special Event at Flint Center. As always, I was too excited for the event. But this time, it was going to be bigger as Apple created a dedicated page on their website for the event countdown, which they never did before. In the last 24 hours, Apple also redirected the Apple homepage to the countdown page. Just an hour before the event took place, they also featured tweets from Apple executives and Fashion bloggers on the countdown page in timeline view. All of this was being done very first time, and it only pointed that Apple is going to show incredible stuff in the event.
According to the leaks and reports, it was clear that Apple was going to release two new iPhones, one of which will be 4.7inch and other will be huge 5.5inch. But the thing everyone was excited about was iWatch. Apple was going to show us their smartwatch too.
As expected, Apple did announced the new iPhones and Apple Watch(sounds better than iWatch) yesterday. They also announced Apple Pay, a new way to pay for goods digitally using iPhone, or Apple Watch. Here are my thoughts on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
Both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are almost similar, the only difference is in the screen size. iPhone 6 sports a 4.7inch Retina HD display with 1334 by 750 pixels resolution at 326 pixels-per-inch. iPhone 6 Plus will come with 5.5inch Retina HD display with 1920 by 1080 pixels resolution at 401 pixels-per-inch.
The iPhone 6 is just 6.9mm thick and weighs 4.55 ounces while the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm thick and weighs 6.07 ounces. Talking about the design, Apple has managed to make the new iPhones slimmer than iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. iPhone 6 looks really nice with slightly more rounder corners. The only thing that doesn’t look quite right is the protruding camera on the back.
Both the new iPhones will come with A8 chip with 64-bit architecture and M8 motion coprocessor. A8 processor is faster and more efficient. The new M8 processor can now track distance as well as elevations with the help of new Barometer sensor in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will sport the same 8MP iSight camera with 1.5µ pixels, but there’s an all new camera sensor for taking better pictures. The new camera sensor will come with some new features, one of which described by Phil Schiller at the event is Focus Pixels. Focus Pixels will let the new iPhones focus quickly and automatically. So, while recording a video, the sensor will automatically focus a closer object when you move the phone in front of it, you will not have to tap to focus manually. Both the phones will also sport the same True Tone flash which was first introduced in iPhone 5s. There’s also improved Face detection, Exposure Control and Auto Stabilisation in the new iPhones.
Along with all the previous features, the new Facetime camera in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will have improved face detection. The Facetime camera will also capture 81% more light and in the new burst mode, users will be able to take 10 photos per second.
Users will able to record full 1080p videos at 30fps as well as at 60fps with the new iPhones. New iPhones will be able to record Slo-mo videos at 120fps as well as at 240fps. There will also be Cinematic Video Stabilisation for better video quality and Continuous autofocus video for automatic focussing.
iPhone 6 will feature Digital Image Stabilisation while iPhone 6 Plus will feature Optical Image Stabilisation, which will help users take sharp photos.
iPhone 6 will support more LTE bands than any other smartphone. Users can get up to 150 Mbps download speed over LTE. iPhone 6 also supports VoLTE(Voice Over LTE) which will let users make high-quality calls with very clear sound. With the new 802.11ac support, users will be able to experience up to 3 times faster Wi-Fi. iPhone 6 will also let users make calls over Wi-Fi using their own phone numbers. iPhone 6 also supports NFC(Near Field Communication).
Just like iPhone 5s, the iPhone 6 also has Touch ID for security. Users will be able to use their Fingerprint not only in 3rd-party applications but also to pay through Apple Pay.
Availability and Pricing
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available for pre-order on 12th of September and will start shipping from 19th of September. The iPhones will be available in three colors: space gray, silver and gold.
16GB iPhone 6 will be available for $199, 64GB for $299 and 128GB for $399. Off-contract pricing of iPhone 6 starts from $649.
16GB iPhone 6 Plus will be available for $299, 64GB for $399 and 128GB for $499. Off-contract pricing of iPhone 6 Plus starts from $749.
In my opinion, the 5.5inch iPhone is too big. And if I’ll go with any of the new iPhones, it isn’t going to be the 5.5inch iPhone. Even with the extruding camera on the back, I really love the way how the new iPhones are done. All I want to say about the design is that both the iPhones look classic. The pricing is reasonable and is just as expected. Apple is also keeping iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s which is a good thing.
