The company behind Ubuntu is raising $32,000,000 for the flagship Ubuntu Smartphone, they are calling it Ubuntu Edge. The company is raising this very high amount in just 31 days and people are showing interest too seeing the funding it have received till now.

In the very first day, it already received about $800k which is incredible, and I don't think there is any another startup till now in which people showed up this much interest.

The phone is a result of several researches. They have made it a 4.5inch phone which is found to be ideal for use. Also, 300dpi is standard screen density and the Ubuntu Edge is focussed more on the brightness and dynamic range.

Here's a list of full specifications of the Ubuntu Smartphone Edge.

  • Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android
  • Fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC when docked
  • Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • 4.5in 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display
  • 8mp low-light rear camera, 2mp front camera
  • Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC
  • GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer
  • Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation
  • MHL connector, 3.5mm jack
  • Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery
  • 64 x 9 x 124mm

If you look at the video, they say it has got coating of sapphire crystal which is very hard, so you don't need to be as careful as you be with your Android or Apple smartphone.

Looking at the phone's hardware, it is easier to conclude that the phone is going to perform very well with 4GB of RAM and with what they say "Fastest Multicore Processor". Also, the storage is 128GB which is more than enough for storing movies and all the files you need on the go.

The phone supports fastest network connection, that is LTE and Bluetooth 4.o which is good. The phone has got 8MP of camera which captures better photos in low-light, the front camera is 2 megapixel.

The phone will be running Ubuntu and Android, and you can boot into any OS on your phone. This is a good idea because the phone has got the performing hardware, it should be able to run both OS without any lag issues or something.

Also, the phone when docked will run the Ubuntu desktop. You will be able to use full Ubuntu OS from your phone to your desktop. So, more or less, you are carrying a computer with you.

The phone will only be available for those who are funding in the startup. You can checkout the Indiegogo page here.
